Seymour Middle School Golf is ready to begin another season in the East Tennessee Golf Association.
As with many other sports in the Seymour School system this year, the team will have a new coach. Seymour Middle will be coached by 1st year head coach Will Cravens and Assistant Coach Warren Jones.
The home team’s course for the SMS Eagles will be Creekside Plantation in Seymour which is also the home course for the Seymour High School team.
The Eagles will have nine boys and 7 girls. The boys’ team will have one eighth grader, Nick Halbert and three seventh graders, Brandon Cravens, Peyton Pressley and Richmond Hall along with one sixth grader Matt Hurton.
The future of SMS golf looks solid with four fifth graders Hayden Lillie, Jacob Welborn, Garrett McVittie and Wesley Jones.
The girls’ team is made up of two seventh graders, Cheyenne Nieman and Shelby Stinnett; and three 6th graders Camille Davis, Mollie Webb and Taylor Lane. Two fifth graders also help the future of the girl’s golf program; Caroline Hood and Katelyn Witucki.
The youth of the team is “not only by design but also by attrition” according to Coach Cravens, “Last year’s team graduated several players and this team has only four returning players, two on the boys’ team and two on the girls’ team.”
Even with the team being young and inexperienced, Coach Cravens is excited about his golf team, “I am confident that with all the hard work each player has put into training and instruction, this season will be a success. I would also like to thank Creekside Golf Course, Dr. Nelson, the SMS principal and the parents for their understanding and willingness to help; you have made our jobs as coaches a pleasant one.”
The team has been practicing at Creekside Plantation Golf Course which has an excellent driving range and putting green as well as the course. Improvement in golf comes from individual work more so than team practice. Creekside’s creation has been a huge blessing to the golfers of the Seymour Community. In the past the Creekside ownership has not been the easiest to deal with but recently things have seemed to improve, according to sources. Matt Fannon does an excellent job as club pro.
Middle School golf is played in the spring while High school golf is played in the fall. The middle school golf team’s first match is March 15th at Pine Lakes Golf Course against South-Doyle and Saint Johns. The first home match will be Tuesday, March 23rd at Creekside Golf Course.
