KNOXVILLE – The Tennessee women’s swimming and diving team was named a Scholar-Athlete All-American squad by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America on Friday.
The Lady Vols, who had a team grade point average of 3.14 for the fall semester, were one of 112 women’s Division I teams that made the list by having a GPA above 3.00.
A total of 341 intercollegiate men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams from all three divisions and the NAIA were recognized by the CSCAA.
The University of Bridgeport’s women’s program led all teams with a 3.65 GPA, while Gardner-Webb had the top women’s Division I team GPA at 3.52.
Friday’s academic acknowledgment is just the most recent award in a long line of scholar-athlete honors captured by Lady Vol swimmers and divers in recent years.
Just last season, senior Sarah McCall was named to the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV At-Large Team, and former Lady Vol national champion Christine Magnuson garnered the H. Boyd McWhorter Southeastern Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award.
Additionally, six members of the UT women’s swimming and diving team were named to the CSCAA Academic All-American team in 2009.
The Big Orange recently wrapped up its regular season and will be in action next at the SEC Championships from Feb. 17-20 in Athens, Ga.
