The Seymour Eagles closed out a very successful season by finishing second in the Region. The Region Championship was played in Kingsport against Kingsport Dobbins-Bennett High School. The Eagles lost in a close one 14-13. The pin fall count was D-B with 3,006 to Seymour with 2,976.
Seymour got a slow start by losing the first game of the three game series. The Eagles then came back taking the last two.
Seymour bowled well below their average for the entire match.
Coach Charles Ogle had this to say, “We went to Kingsport where we had never bowled on those lanes. It took the first game to get use to their lanes. That shouldn’t be an excuse however. We just bowled way below our averages as a team. The boys made a courageous comeback, but it wasn’t quite enough.” The Eagles only lost by 30 pins. That is a heartbreaking margin considering it knocked them out of the state.
Senior Cory Cox qualified for the state as an individual. The TSSAA State Bowling Championship was held in Smyrna, Tennessee.
Cox was eliminated after the first cut. He didn’t bowl up to his usual standards. Cox’s scores were 201-222-158-247. He missed the cut by only six pins; very much like his team’s narrow loss. Coach Ogle said, “Cory is a fine young man. I’ve watched him over the past four years mature and become by far the best bowler that I’ve ever coached.”
When asked to summarize the season, Coach Ogle said, “We didn’t do as well as last year but we still had a very successful season. Our record was 15-5. We beat G-P for the first time. The boys worked hard. I’m going to miss the seniors, Zack Cook, Joey Snyder and Cory Cox.”
Coach Ogle wants the message out to all eighth grade bowlers who wants to be on the bowling team next year to contact him about playing.
The Seymour Herald would like to congratulate the Seymour Bowling team for a successful season.
