The weather was perfect. The crowd was phenomenal. But the victory was 'sweet' for the Seymour Eagles Thursday night when they blasted the Cherokee Chiefs at Benton Househoulder Field in front of a large 'Homecoming' crowd by a final of 44-6.
The short lived lead of 6-0, that Cherokee took on a Hunter Hamilton pass to Landon House of 43 yards, was quickly erased on several Seymour scores.
Stephen Martin dented the scoreboard first on a 30 yard field goal on their first drive. Shortly after, the Seymour defense smothered the Cherokee offense to force a fumble. That's when SR Keegan Newport raced in from five yards out to give the Eagles a 10-6 lead. SR back Blake Overton padded the lead moments later on a 20 yard run and score to push the lead 17-6. Newport found the end zone once again from one yard out in the third frame of play, only to be followed by a Cory Todd score to open up the Eagle lead even more. Seymour QB Ryan Chadwick burned the Cherokee defense once more on a second and long pass to Overton for 25 yards and yet another score. Final scoring once again came from Overton on a punt return to put the final dagger into the hearts of the visiting Chiefs making the final 44-6.
Coach Moore seemed relieved to finally punch a ticket to the play-offs. "We are definitely excited about this one. A lot of our seniors got to play here on senior night. We just had a bunch of fighters out there tonight that wouldn't quit. We certainly had a bunch of 'Warriors' with 'Lions Hearts' that made it all happen."
Even though the Eagles get an extra day off this week by playing on Thursday, the football mentor told the Herald that their is no time for rest.
"We have got to have a terrific week of practice in order to get ready for Morristown West this Friday. Every game is big, but this next one is huge." Moore concluded.
Offensive tackle Nick Smith was elated. "We were really fired up tonight. We had so much going on this week with homecoming and all, but we didn't let that get in our way of winning this ball game. This week's practice will have to be tough in order to beat Morristown West. We do have momentum on our side though. We'll definitely need that. Smith concluded.
SR kicker Stephen Martin got a lot of leg work in on the evening by booting all of the PAT'S. Martin also told the Herald that he will also need to take that momentum on the road to MO-town. "The offensive line done a wonderful job of blocking tonight for all of us. When you have blockers like Nick Smith and the rest of these young guys, it makes the kicking game much easier. We'll need that next week. These guys are awesome." Martin said.
SR running back Overton agreed. "I think Nick does a wonderful job blocking for Keegan and I. He will actually go out and block one guy and then move onto the next. He creates a lot of big gaps in the line of scrimmage and then moves on for another block that you don't even expect. His inspiration to this team is huge. He's had a great season no doubt, Overton continued.
Overton is excited for his backfield next week even though the game is on the road. "They have turf up there in Morristown. I think that will help Keegan and I. It's fast, durable, and fun to play on. I actually train on turf, so I know it very well. It will be interesting though." Overton concluded.
