Seymour Lady Eagles basketball star Casie Cowan has signed a full athletic scholarship with the Cumberland University Lady Bulldogs basketball program. The 5’ 4” point guard at Seymour committed on October 16th and signed Friday October 30th in the Seymour High School Library. Many well wishers were present; teachers, coaches, friends, family and teammates.
Cumberland University is located in Lebanon, Tennessee and is classified an NAIA school. It has a rich tradition in basketball with good competition.
Cowan averaged 10 points and 3 assists per game. Her excellent ball handling and passing contributed to Seymour’s 44 wins the last two seasons. She played a big part in Seymour’s 22-9 season record and reaching the Class AA State sectionals.
Cowan, an All County, All-District 3-AA and All-Region 2-AA player is listed on Tennessee’s Prep Girls Elite 80 and ESPN’s Women’s basketball recruiting list. A starter since her sophomore year, Cowan was recruited by Winthrop, Western Kentucky, Bryan, Virginia Intermont and Emory & Henry. She is hands down one of the most heralded basketball players to come out of Seymour High School.
Lady Eagle’s basketball coach Andy Rines had this to say, “Casie is very deserving. She has worked very hard to improve. I thought she was good last year, but she has improved so much from last season until now. Her goal has always been to play college basketball and get a good education. Cumberland is a really good school. I’m very excited, proud and happy for her.”
Everyone at the signing ceremony spoke about how hard Cowan has worked.
Her Dad commented, “She’s worked really hard. Basketball is first with her. She’s made a lot of sacrifices to get where she is today.” Seymour principal Greg Clark spoke more of Cowan as a person and student, “Casie is an outstanding young lady. She is a quality person who is a good student and a pleasure to have in school.”
The Cumberland College Lady Bulldogs are coached by Jeremy Lewis who was present for the signing as well as other assistant coaches. Coach Lewis commented, “We are extremely excited. I really feel like we got a steal with Casie. She could play division one basketball. She has things you can’t teach. Number one is instincts. Number two is speed. She has a quick release on her jump shot, can shoot the ball and she is a very hard worker.”
The happy occasion was summed up at the end with a quote from Cowan herself, “When I started playing in front of college coaches, I was nervous at first but I worked really hard and Cumberland started recruiting me. It is a great opportunity and I’m really excited about it. I worked hard every day and was the first at practice and the last one to leave. That’s what it takes.”
Congratulations to Casie Cowan for an honor well deserved and good luck at Cumberland University.
