A couple local dirt track racers made Saturday, September 28 a night they’ll never forget.
Mickey Burris, of Newport, collected his first ever win Saturday at 411 Motor Speedway in the Modified Mini (FWD) Feature. Newport resident Chuck McMahan sped to his first win at 411 in the standard Modified Mini Feature.
Both Burris and McMahan raced to Victory Lane despite a field of stout competition from rival drivers. McMahan held off Kodak’s Chris Kelley and Knoxville’s Brian Berkley, second and third place finishers, respectively, while Burris was pushed to the limit by Josh Dyer (second-place finisher), of Louisville, and Alex Squires (third-place finisher), of Maryville, in the Modified Mini (FWD) competition.
Last week’s Modified Mini winner Cindy Poore, of Seymour, finished in fifth place behind McMahan Saturday. Josh Beal, also of Seymour, finished Saturday’s race in sixth place.
The only hometown driver finishing in the top 14 of the 14-car Modified Mini (FWD) field was Seymour’s Robert Burris, who finished in 13th place.
Knoxville’s Brad Hall reigned victorious in the heated Late Model Feature, the race that many 411 observers refer to as “the main event” of the night. Hall took top honors in front of second-place finisher Josh Collins, of Powell, and third-place finisher Jason Cardwell, of Knoxville.
Hometown driver Rusty Ballenger, of Seymour, finished a strong seventh, while Seymour fan-favorite Frog Ingle finished in 14th place.
Robbie Comer, of Lafollette, continues to have a great season of racing, winning Saturday’s Modified Street feature. Comer finished in front of the seven-car Modified Street field ahead of second-place finisher Tony Horton, of Sneedville, and third place Johnny Ridings, of Blount County. Sevierville residents Justin McCarter (fourth-place), Brad Lewelling (fifth-place) and Mike Lewelling (sixth-place) and Gatlinburg’s own Rocky Ogle (seventh-place) rounded out the seven-car field.
Knoxville’s Frederick Romines took first place honors in the Street Stock Feature. He finished in front of Joe Seiber (second-place finisher), of Oliver Springs, and Jeff Rife (third-place finisher), of Dandridge.
Hometown driver Travis Reno—a past winner of the race—finished in 10th place in Saturday’s Street Stock race.
Clyde Stanton, of Knoxville, won Saturday’s Trucks Feature while behind the wheel of fellow driver Freddie Hillard’s truck. Stanton continues his pursuit of the points championship while Hillard did not race Saturday night. Maryville’s Robert Martin finished in second place and Seymour’s own Larry Sullivan finished in third place.
The Truck Feature’s current points leader, teenage driver Tiffany Sheehan, finished in fourth place Saturday night.
Meanwhile, Drew Kennedy, of Strawberry Plains, won the Classics Feature. Knoxville’s Logan Dukes was second and Greenback’s Marvin Ray was third.
