A 6-3 Region 2-AA Tournament loss at Stone Memorial Monday put a cap on the Seymour Lady Eagles’ 2008 softball season.
The Lady Eagles (11-11-1) finished their 2007 season in the very same place, with a season-ending loss to Stone Memorial in the first-round of the region tourney.
The scrappy Lady Eagles earned their second straight region tournament bid by fighting and clawing their way to the championship game of last week’s District 3-AA Tournament. Seymour managed to win three out of five games in the district round, losing in the winners’ bracket final and again in the championship game to eventual tourney champ Gibbs.
Seymour, which knocked off Rutledge 6-1 in the regular season finale’ on May 1, bashed Austin-East 17-0 in the district tournament’s first round before knocking off tournament-host Alcoa, 7-2, in a pivotal winners’ bracket match-up in the double elimination tournament. The Lady Eagles suffered their first tourney loss, 10-0, to Gibbs on Friday but bounced back to shut out Alcoa, 10-0, later Friday evening in a contest that pushed SHS into the region.
Gibbs defeated Seymour 12-0 in the district tournament title game on Saturday.
