Tennessee head athletic trainer Jason McVeigh reports that fullback David Holbert has undergone the first of two surgical procedures to correct ligament damage in his left knee.

A Nashville native, Holbert was injured March 29 in the Vols’ first full scrimmage of spring. The latest mishap occurred less than eight months after he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in a similar preseason practice at Neyland Stadium. Holbert used 2007 as a medical redshirt season and was repeating his senior year for Tennessee.

McVeigh said Holbert will undergo the second of the two procedures this summer and continue his rehabilitation after that.

Drs. Greg Mathien and Russell Betcher of the Knoxville Orthopedic Clinic performed this week’s surgery.
