co-head freshman coach chris smelcer lists the only players he's seen go straight to varsity

published: September 26 2007 10:53 AM updated:: September 26 2007 10:42 AM

The Seymour freshman football team’s co-head coach Chris Smelcer lists five former SHS players that were talented enough to jump from middle school straight to varsity.

  • Gary Stinnett—The current Eagles’ varsity running back coach played in the Seymour offensive backfield as a ninth grader. Stinnett, a 1997 SHS graduate, went on to have an outstanding career and went on to star for East Tennessee State University. “He’s one of the best running backs in Seymour history,” Smelcer said of Stinnett, who carried the ball 52 times in a playoff game against Fulton his senior season.
  • Scott Galyon—The most decorated and successful SHS player of all time, Galyon graduated from Seymour High in 1992 after a four-year playing career that began during his freshman season. Galyon, of course, went on to star as a linebacker at the University of Tennessee and later played in the National Football League for the New York Giants and Miami Dolphins.
  • Lynn Miller—A wide receiver who graduated at the turn of the century (2000), Miller was the total package at wide-out with great speed and very good hands, according Smelcer. “He was about 6-foot-3, and about 180 pounds, just one of those kids who don’t come around very often,” Smelcer observed. Miller, like the next two players on the list, was a member of the successful Seymour teams in the late 1990s that made those memorable state playoff runs.
  • Cameron Atchley—A 2001 SHS graduate who made the unlikely move from middle school to varsity ball during the late 90s. Atchley, a physical linebacker and fullback and SHS, went on to earn All-Conference at Carson-Newman.
  • Barney Dalton—Another 2001 graduate, Dalton was also called upon to make an impression at the varsity level as a ninth-grader.

Scott Galyon did not play varsity as a freshman. Neither did Barney dalton or Cameron Atchley.

Also, Mike Latham was left off the list. Latham helped guide the eagles to a 12-0 start before losing in the Semi-Finals of state back in 1980.

These new Freshman coaches don't know very much about Seymour ball do they????? Why does this not suprize me.

#3 another parent commented, on October 1, 2007 at 12:26 p.m.:

my son won't even play for them he came home and said they didn't know what they were talking about and that the coaches were praying with them in the locker room

I played with Smelcer and Cam and Barney both came up from freshman that year when we lost a few players. I am not sure about Galyon. What in the world is wrong with coaches praying with the players? Coach Householder does everyday with his! Great job guys, keep it up!

I'm sure that your son that came out for a day and said the coaches didn't know what they were talkin about just knows so much about football himself. And I gaurantee you that these coached know more about Seymour football or just football in general than anyone that has posted a comment on here.

What a sad state we are in when a parent is upholding their children for being so disgruntle toward their leaders. If the only problem we have is that the coaches are praying with the boys or girls then I think we don't have a problem. Maybe the " Seymour parent & "another parent" should get more involved with their children and the coaches to see what is really going on. May I commend the coaches and staff at Seymour.

one coach Mr. Smelcer has been fired from 2 football coaching jobs and quit his college baseball team and the other coach shular quit playing football at carson newman so two quiters are coaching football i am sure they are doing a great job

#8 to # 7 commented, on October 3, 2007 at 11:24 a.m.:

Well I think the fact that his former team (Pigeon Forge) going 0-10 last year may have had something to do with Smelcer coming back to Seymour, where he wanted to be in the first place. And the freshman have had a good year so far. So it seems like to me that they're doing a pretty good job.

#9 Boo-Who? commented, on October 3, 2007 at 11:46 a.m.:

Actually, Coach Smelcer was not fired from a football job at Greenback. Jack Parton called him to Seymour. Then he put in for transfer to Seymour. He coach my boy to a World Series Championship in 16-17 year old. Great job Coach, keep it up!

#10 to # 9 commented, on October 3, 2007 at 6:40 p.m.:

if jack parton called him to seymour from Greenback then why did he go from greenback to Pigeon forge then to seymour ask the people from pigeon forge what they think of the guy

#11 BOO WHO ? commented, on October 4, 2007 at 10:58 a.m.:

Hey PF, it's good to see that you all are doing so much better without him.

#13 to # 12 commented, on October 4, 2007 at 3:37 p.m.:

we are definately better off and without him and are glad he is at seymour that helps us in the long run but he will leave his mark the boys see right through him Smelcer is a fake

#14 to # 13 commented, on October 4, 2007 at 3:48 p.m.:

#16 Coach Fan commented, on October 5, 2007 at 10:20 a.m.:

Coach Smelcer, I am your number #1 fan. Keep on praying with the boys...that is what is missing in the world today. Keep God 1st!

#17 To all commented, on October 5, 2007 at 11:11 a.m.:

I personally think all of the verbal attacks are not fair either way when the person you are talking about is not present to defend the accusations. You are giving alot of information that is not correct. I am sure you think it is but I can assure you the facts are not as you have stated them. You certainly have the right to not like someone but to verbaly attack them is dangerous. Why don't you step up speak to him in person and give him a chance to answer instead of taking the cheap shots you have chosen and trying to ruin someone.

#18 To Some commented, on October 5, 2007 at 1:18 p.m.:

I agree that more praying needs to be done, but it CANNOT be done with the football team as the rules are now. I do think that is wrong, but that's the way it is. I have not seen many people verbally attacking "coach" smelcer. I think they are just showing their distaste for the man, which is apparently felt by many from Greenback to P.F. to Seymour.

#19 To You commented, on October 8, 2007 at 2 p.m.:

Do you go to the football games? Don't they pray before every game in front of the entire football team and fans? Yes, I believe they do!

#20 True commented, on October 8, 2007 at 3:03 p.m.:

but that is student led i believe the people before were saying this was coach led which is against the law

#21 Scott commented, on October 10, 2007 at 8:51 p.m.:

#7 You need to know what you are talking about before you open your mouth. Matt Shuler played 4 years of college football and never quit.
