The 2007 Homecoming Week at Seymour High School officially kicked off Monday morning with the annual SHS Powder Puff Football Game. It will culminate Thursday night when the new Homecoming Queen is crowned during the homecoming ceremonies at the Seymour vs. Claiborne football game, which kicks off at 7:30 p.m.
“Homecoming is a great time because it gets a lot of kids involved,” said Seymour High School head football coach and athletics director Gary Householder. “We’ve been fortunate to have a student body at our school that has always been very active and very supportive of the football team.
“But homecoming gets even more of the students involved and out to the football game. It’s always an exciting time and a time that we look forward to every year.”
Householder said the rare mid-week game night situation does cause some unusual situations with his squad’s practice schedule this week.
“It forced us to change our practice schedule,” the SHS Football Coach explained.
Householder explained that the jayvee game scheduled for Monday would remain the same but most everything else had to be moved back a day. What the Eagles normally do on Wednesday was moved to Tuesday, and the practice schedule typically designated for Thursday would be held on Wednesday this week.
As for the Powder Puff Football (PPF) teams, a new champion should have been determined before the last bell on Tuesday.
In Monday’s semifinal round of the PPF, the senior team defeated the scrappy freshman squad 6-0 in the first game of the morning. The sophomores then upended the junior’s bid for a Powder Puff Championship with a 6-0 victory in game-two of the semifinals.
The championship game between the seniors and the sophomores was scheduled to take place Tuesday afternoon to decide bragging rights.
The next big event of homecoming week is the annual Homecoming Parade that will begin at the back of the high school Thursday at 1:15 and move around in front of the middle school, primary school and intermediate school.
A pep rally will be held in the school’s gymnasium at the conclusion of the parade.
The football game on Thursday will feature the Eagles, with an overall record of 6-2 and riding a two-game winning streak, against their Region 1-3A rival Claiborne Bulldogs (3-5, 1-3) in a key late-season conference showdown.
