A grandmother's idea started three people in motorcycle racing business in Seymour.
Heather and Brian McGinnis and Heather's brother Joey Gratton started a Motocross Track on basically a suggestion and a prayer.
"We knew we wanted a family business," stated Heather.
Her grandmother was always suggesting silly ideas like selling dog sweaters or something like that.
"One day," Heather recalls, "Her grandmother called and said I've got a business for you - I thought here we go again. . . Why don't you start a Motocross Track."
Heather jumped on that idea even though they had no idea what it took to start, let alone run such a business.
Brian had been riding motorcycles since he was 14 and was the service manager at a local motorcycle dealership, so the three of them got together and started Shiloh MX Park LLC.
It didn't take Heather any time to get started.
"I'm a cliff jumper, I'm really ambitious and I'll get right in there and come up with plans in no time ," Heather said. "I did find out that Racing was a massive undertaking though."
The three looked for land, identified and purchased XX acres near Shiloh Church on Shiloh Church Road in Seymour in 2005. "The layout of the land is beautiful and is graced by the presence of the church in the background so it's a nice place to be", says Heather.
"Things literally fell in our laps," Heather, who has lived here since 1986 said.
"We hired two guys that build national tracks for TV races to come in, and in 2 days they turned a cow pasture into a professional mile long motocross track. They come out each year and redesign the track to keep it interesting for the riders.
Heather said, "God is very good to us and has showed us great favor."
They built a registration/concession building where they serve homemade gravy with biscuits on race days and some of the best hot dogs around. The building also has men's and women's restrooms both complete with hot showers.
Shiloh MX opened their doors in April 2006.
"Our first year was a struggle because we had a lot to learn," Heather said. But they learned from the suggestions of many of the experienced riders who come to the track to practice and race. The track gets better and better as time goes on. It's manicured everyday before they open for practice or racing to give the riders the best conditions.
They are open three days a week, Thursdays and Sundays for practice and Saturdays for racing.
Each race day starts with a meeting and prayer with the racers. The rules are outlined and the race classes are determined.
Many of the racers, their friends and family spend the entire day at the track, watching, picnicking and just visiting. There is a playground for the young children and a fantastic viewing deck for anyone who wishes to come out to spectate.
There is a free race scheduled for the 21st of July. Just pay the gate fee ($10) and riders can race in as many classes as they wish for free.
The track is in it's second year of business, and from the looks of it, it's going to be winner.
