A brief summer rain storm dashed any hopes for a Seymour rally on the back-nine Wednesday in a pre-season golf tournament at Ruggles Ferry Golf Club in Strawberry Plains.
The Eagles (156) wound up finishing in third place at the multiple-team exhibition behind first place Farragut (143) and second place West (154).
Webb (157) finished in fourth place, while the Carter Hornets (165) placed fifth on their home course.
Just as the top-seeded players were about to turn the corner and head to the back-nine of the tree-lined course, the sky opened up and let it rain down just long enough for event organizers to say, “Till we meet again during the season.”
Seymour assistant coach Lee Ramsey said he was kind of sad to see the rain thwart any hopes for a Seymour rally, but as a rational man, he didn’t see his Eagles coming all the way back to catch the squad from Farragut anyway.
“We more than likely wouldn’t have been able to catch up to Farragut, “Ramsey said. “They have a lot of good players. They deserved to win it.”
Kevin Huff looks to already be in midseason form for the Eagles. He led the way with a individual round of 36 after nine holes. Willie Sexton (39) had the Eagles’ second best total.
Juniors Andrew Ramsey (40), Derrick Rickles (41), and Taylor Lindsey (47) rounded out the scoring for Seymour.
Ramsey said he wasn’t encouraged by the way his team performed as a whole but he did take a moment to offer his compliments to Huff.
“Kevin Huff is just one of the most talented players that I’ve ever seen,” Ramsey commented. “He just started playing three years ago. He’s just naturally talented.”
Huff and Sexton are both seniors.
