Junior Brooke Johnson was named Southern Conference Player of the Week, as selected by the conference office, after two career-high performances in Western Carolina women’s basketball’s victories over UNC Asheville and Middle Tennessee.

It is the first SoCon player of the week honor for Johnson, a former All-State performer at Seymour High School and the school’s all-time leading scorer.

Johnson had a huge game against in-state rival UNC Asheville on November 28. The 6-4 center not only poured in a season-high 21 points she backed up her offensive prowess with a strong defensive showing blocking six shots to set a new career-high.

At Middle Tennessee, she returned to her home state and made a huge statement against the Blue Raiders. She pulled down a career-high 20 rebounds representing the highest single-game rebounding total in the Southern Conference since January 1996.

For the week, Johnson averaged 16.5 points, 11.5 rebounds and four blocked shots per contest.

Western Carolina will put its three-game winning streak and 5-1 record on the line Saturday when the Lady Catamounts host Wake Forest. Tip-off is set for 4:03 p.m. in the Ramsey Center.
