The Seymour volleyball squad finished second in the Silver Division Saturday in the second annual Smoky Mountain Volleyball Tournament held in Blount County.
The young Lady Eagles stumbled against bigger, more established squads at the 12-team tourney, dropping SHS to sixth place overall in the tourney’s field.
“I hate to be so prophetic, but my preseason prognosis has proven true, at least to this point in that it is going to be hard to replace the four seniors from our ’06 team” Seymour head coach Ed Irvin commented. “
"As our scores indicate, we were in all of the matches we played, but haven't found a combination that can put together a full match against comparable opponents," Irvin added.
"My biggest concern is our lack of a "killer instinct" Irvin continued. " In the finals of the Silver division we were up against a much improved and motivated Sevier County Lady Smoky Bears team. They had already beaten us once during the pool play and we had another shot at them after beating Alcoa in the semi-finals. In the first game of the finals we were leading 19-10, only to lose 24-26. We were leading in the second game 20-10, but were able to maintain the momentum and won 25-12. In the third and deciding game to 15, we had a 9-2 lead, only to lose 14-16.
“I certainly give all of the credit for the loss to Sevier County for their "never quit" attitude."
The Lady Eagles return to action at Knox Catholic on Tuesday to play Catholic & CAK, and will host Halls on Thursday. The Lady Eagles now stand at 8-7 on the season with the core of the all-important district slate still to be played.
