Santa Clara takes 1-0 win over

Snell nets Golden Goal goal at 92:32 to give Broncos the win Santa Clara junior forward Meagan Snell knocked in the rebound off senior defender Hillary Schwarzbach’s shot in the first overtime period to propel the third-ranked Broncos over ninth-ranked Tennessee, 1-0, in the 2006 Stanford Nike Invitational at Maloney Field. Snell’s golden goal halted the match at 92:38 and came after Schwarzbach tried to head home the Kiki Bosio corner kick. UT sophomore goalkeeper Jaimel Johnson (Dayton, Ohio) stopped the first try, but the rebound went toward Snell, who put it into the net. The goal came after Tennessee (4-2-1) had chances to end the match in regulation. Sophomore forward Kylee Rossi (Pennington, N.J.) had two open looks at goal in the final 10 minutes that missed wide. In the 83rd minute, Rossi took a shot from inside the penalty box after senior midfielder Ali Christoph (Columbus, Ohio) stole the ball from a Bronco midfielder, but the shot missed right. Three minutes later, Rossi controlled a failed clearance and tried to chip the ball over Santa Clara netminder Meagan McCray, but her try drifted left. Santa Clara (6-2) had one try toward the end of regulation to win the match, as Lexi Orand tried her luck in the 88th minute from 20 yards out, but her blast went over the crossbar. The first half saw both squads battle, with Santa Clara taking a 10-4 advantage in shots in the period. However, UT saw three of its shots fired on goal, with Santa Clara only making one threat. “Today, I was just very proud of the effort the team put forth,” said three-time Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year Angela Kelly. “The game went back and forth. The best thing about (today) is the team grew. With every win or loss, you can learn something. They gained a lot of character today with the way they battled in the heat against the No. 3 team in the country. We were able to post some great opportunities to put the game away ourselves. The credit goes to Santa Clara. Jerry Smith is a great coach, and he has them very well organized. “It’s been a great trip for our squad, traveling to the west coast and playing two of the top teams in the country. Stanford’s ranking does not represent the ability they have, and Santa Clara is definitely a great team. We are excited to finish out our non-conference schedule and are really looking forward to starting our conference (play). I think we gained everything out of the non-conference schedule that we were looking to do, which was to prepare them for anything they may face in the conference and to also have them understand that they can play with anyone in the country so when the NCAA Tournament comes around, they are ready to go and don’t fear any one particular opponent. We have grown in each and every match up to this point, and I’m excited to see how they perform in the conference.” In the match, the Broncos held an 18-8 advantage in shots and a 5-3 edge in corner kicks. Santa Clara’s goal was the first allowed by Tennessee’s defense in over 270 minutes of play. The loss pushed UT’s record in matches between top-10 teams to 0-4-1 all-time. Tennessee opens up SEC action in Oxford, Miss., on Friday night at 7 p.m. CDT against Mississippi.
