16 inning Game is longest in Smokies Park history The Tennessee Smokies fell to the Chattanooga Lookouts 9-5 in 16 innings Tuesday at Smokies Park. Lookouts’ shortstop Anderson Machado hit a game-winning grand-slam home run in the top of the 16th inning to give Chattanooga the hard-earned victory. The Smokies took a 5-2 lead into the eighth inning behind seven strong innings of work from starting pitcher Micah Owings, but closer Doug Slaten could not shut the door, allowing the Lookouts to tie the game and send it into extra innings before Machado’s blast put Chattanooga ahead for good. The two teams play again 7:15 p.m. Wednesday at Smokies Park. Short Hops: * Owings struck out eight batters in the loss for the Smokies, giving him 55 on the season; * Outfielder Alex Frazier hit his second home run of the season in the sixth inning; * The longest game in Southern League history was a 10-7 Greenville, SC victory over Huntsville in 23 innings in 1997.
