Saturday racing program washed out

Planned racing action at Volunteer Speedway gets thwarted by Mother Nature With a strong overall field of cars present in the pits for racing Saturday, May 13 at Volunteer Speedway, around 9 p.m. a rain shower moved over the track thus forcing the night’s racing program to be canceled. “Earlier in the day while looking at the weather forecast it looked like the rain scheduled to move into the East Tennessee region wouldn’t arrive until well after midnight, and we were all geared up for our night of racing,” said Volunteer Speedway owner Joe Loven. “Saturday turned out to be a nice, sunny day with temperatures in the low-70s. But unfortunately there’s nothing any of us can do when it comes to the weather. With the rain shower that moved over the track, by the time we could’ve gotten the track run (packed) back in and completed qualifying, it would’ve been around 11 p.m. or later before we could have started the first feature race. Starting that late, it would have meant the racing program wouldn’t have been completed until after 1 a.m. or in all reality closer to 2 a.m. “Once everbody puts forth the effort to make it out to the track, we’ll do what’s in reason to get the show run if at all possible. I really hate it for everyone who was present at the track tonight, but tomorrow is a day of worship plus it’s also Mother’s Day. There’s no way I’m going to keep people here at the track until after 1 a.m. Mother’s are special, and I hope everyone enjoys spending time with their family on Sunday. We’ll just come back next Saturday and hopefully the weather will cooperate and allow us to get our racing program run.” A six division racing program consisting of “Gateway Ford” ASA Super Late Model, “Ramey Ford” Limited (Crate) Late Model, “Lawson Chevrolet” Open Wheel Modified, “Bachman Barnard” Hobby Stock, Mini Stock and “Renegade” Front Wheel Drives is scheduled Saturday, May 20 at Volunteer Speedway. The Mini Stocks will compete in a $500-to-win feature. The pit gate will open Saturday, May 20 at 4 p.m. and the grandstand gate opens at 5 p.m. Hotlaps are “tentatively” set to begin at 6:45 p.m., followed by qualifying at 7:45 p.m., with feature racing getting the green flag “approximately” at 8:45 p.m. Adult grandstand admission is $8, and $2 for children 6-12, with 5-and-under admitted free. Pit passes and backside tier-parking is $20. Those who were present for the May 13 night of racing, your grandstand ticket stub or pit armband must be redeemed for admission on Saturday, May 20.
