Moore claims district crown again

Seymour tennis continues stellar season news@theheraldnewspapers.com For the second time in as many years Seymour’s Keely Moore is the District 3-A/AA singles tennis champion. Moore, a junior who transferred from Cleveland, Tennessee’s Walker Valley High School before her sophomore season, has taken the district by storm since her arrival. Last year she did not lose a game until reaching the state tournament and this season appears to be more of the same. Moore defeated Rockwood’s Karissa King (6-0, 6-1) on the tennis courts at Tyson Park Monday afternoon to wrap up the title. King advance to the championship match by defeating Moore’s freshman teammate Maggie Dew in a previous match. Also for Seymour, sister tandem Megan and Mandy England finished runner-up in girls doubles, and Jordan Lawson and Steven LeGrande were runners-up in boys’ doubles. The Seymour players will advance to meet Catholic in Friday’s 3 p.m. regional round at the Smoky Mountain Tennis Club. “We played well,” said Seymour coach James Cotter. “We probably played as well as we ever have played in a tournament Tuesday. “We had one repeat champion and two runners-up.” Moore, who was also a standout on the Lady Eagles’ state tournament basketball squad, said the butterflies in anticipation of the upcoming meet with Catholic are a bit more intense than the ones she experienced during basketball season. “I’m very nervous,” Moore observed. “I went and watched the girl from Catholic (Cassie Moore no relation) and she was steady. Not real powerful, but she was very steady. “My goal is to make it back to state, and I guess I played my best match of the year yesterday, but I’m very nervous about Friday’s match because they’re so good.”
