Lady Eagles’ junior hurler pitches no-hitter vs. Lady Tornadoes news@theheraldnewspapers.com Chere’ Monday had perhaps the Monday of her life Monday in the Seymour Lady Eagles’ 11-0 District 3-AA Tournament win over bottom-seeded Austin-East. The winless Lady Roadrunners’ final line was all zeros except for five errors. Monday pitched a perfect game in the five-inning Seymour slaughter. Monday was assisted by a couple of sterling defensive plays from centerfielder Chelse Harrell and sophomore first baseman Katie Randals. The Seymour coaching staff opted to play a brand of small ball with the Lady Roadrunners, using bunts to reach base and advance runners. The Lady Eagles’ coaching staff elected to minimize swings against the slow pitching Lady Roadrunners, taking advantage of an inept A-E infield. Under the circumstances, it took a disciplined effort from the Lady Eagles to execute the unusual game plan. It was a game plan that will be drastically changed for the remainder of the tournament. The Lady Eagles face the Alcoa Lady Tornadoes Tuesday night. The Lady Tornadoes are a squad that has had the Lady Eagles’ number in the last several meeting between the two rivals. Monday stole the show against the Lady Roadrunners. The junior right-hander, who is beginning to gain the attention of numerous universities, faced 15 batters in her five innings pitched against Austin-East. She was perfect, not allowing an opposing player to reach base while recording 12 strikeouts. The only balls that the Lady Roadrunners were able to put into play against Monday resulted in quick putouts by the aforementioned Seymour defenders. Seymour was led offensively by Natalie Hawn, Tabitha Baldwin, Monday, Bethany White and Harrell, who all had two hits each in the game. Pigeon Forge 3 Union County 1 In District 2-AA Tournament action, the Lady Tigers of Pigeon Forge got 11 strikeouts from pitcher Jessica McCarter to trim the Union County Lady Patriots 3-1 Monday and move on in the winner’s bracket. Pigeon Forge advanced to face Rutledge on Tuesday. Rutledge advanced to the second round by virtue of a 15-2 first-round win over Gatlinburg-Pittman. McCarter pitched her way out of bases-loaded jams in both the sixth and seventh innings in the contest. She allowed the Lady Patriots lone run in the sixth, and escaped the seventh with a double play turned by the Pigeon Forge third baseman. McCarter faced the same situation—bases loaded with one out—in both the sixth and seventh frames. Courtney Johnson scored all three of Pigeon Forge’s runs in the game. Johnson scored one in the first, one in the third, and one in the fifth off a Haley Johnson RBI.
