Ramsey making splash in spring tourneys

SHS freshman has finished strong in a pair of spring tournaments news@theheraldnewspapers.com Seymour’s Andrew Ramsey, a member of the state tournament Eagles’ golf team, took home the championship trophy in the Plantations Junior Golf Tournament at River Islands Golf Course in Kodak. Ramsey shot a 72 on the tourney’s first day and came back with a round of 78 on day two. His second day total was nine shots ahead of the nearest competitor. The two golfers who finished behind Ramsey hailed from Ohio and Michigan, respectively. The Easter weekend tournament win in Kodak marked Ramsey’s second win on the national tour this spring. Ramsey was also one of the top 100 high school players invited to the prestigious Coca-Cola JR. Classic at Council Fire in Chattanooga. Ramsey, a freshman at SHS, was in competition with a field that included all high school age groups. He shot an 81 at the Chattanooga tourney and finished 17 out of 50 players. He was in the top five until the last hole where he took a disastrous seven on a par three. The tournament was played on April 17. Ramsey’s coach at Seymour High School is Gary Householder. State golf pros qualifying for St. Jude Classic Chattanooga Golf Center’s Mike Bennett (Ooltewah) and Old Hickory Country Club’s Joey Hickman qualified for next months PGA TOUR event in Memphis. Bennett’s two over par round of 72 was low round on the day followed by Hickman’s 74. Five others were tied at 77. A total of 20 professionals attempted today’s qualifier. The 2006 FedEx St. Jude Classic will host a total of 4 Tennessee PGA Professionals in May. The other two participants will be 2005 TPGA Section Champion Kip Henley (Crossville) and Selmer’s Rob Hessing of the Bear Trace at Chickasaw. Friday May 19 th will be the next Open Qualifier for the FedEx and this event is open to professionals and amateurs with handicaps of 2.0 or less. Cost to enter is $200.
