Former Walters State standouts to take their skills to Carson-Newman
The Carson-Newman baseball team has four more additions to the team for the 2007 season.
Jason Gray helped lead Walters State Community College to the national championship in 2006. Gray, an outfielder from Rutledge, Tenn., batted .360 with 16 doubles, two triples a homerun and 45 RBIs. He led the team with 19 stolen bases.
“Jason is a great all-around baseball player,” C-N head coach Tom Griffin said. “He has great instincts in the outfield and is a spark plug offensively. Jason will start in right or left field for us next year.”
Joining his former Walters State teammate will be pitcher Cole Draughn. The Science Hill, Ky. native missed the 2006 season for the Senators due to an arm injury but was one of the weekend starters in 2005. Draughn was 8-4 with a 5.13 ERA and 60 strikeouts in 2005.
“Cole is a bulldog on the mound who is a classic power pitcher. Coming from one of the nation’s best junior college programs, he will be a good leader for our staff,” Griffin said.
Wes McIntyre is a pitcher from Soddy Daisy, Tennessee. He was 5-3 with a 3.39 ERA with 54 strikeouts as a senior last season. “Wes has good command of three pitches and should be able to start and be used in middle relief.”
Mills Rogers is an infielder from Hillcrest High School in South Carolina. He hit .385 with four homers and 15 RBIs in 20 games last season. “Mills is an outstanding defensive player with a plus arm. He had a good offensive year despite missing several games due to an injury. Mills has good instincts on the field,” Griffin stated.
The Eagles were 35-20 in 2006.
