The Seymour Eagles used a sixth-inning Drew Fox homerun to knock off District 3-AA foe Fulton 4-3 Monday evening at Don Doyle Field.
The same two teams were scheduled to meet in the final game of the regular-season home-and-away series Tuesday at Fulton.
Seymour benefited from the long ball and five Falcons’ errors to improve to 9-8 overall and 4-1 in conference play.
The Eagles got a two-run homer from slugger Kyle Koeneman to take a 2-0 first inning lead and manufactured a fourth-inning score after Fulton erupted for three scores in the bottom half of the inning with a three-run shot off Seymour starter Kregan Caughorn.
Caughorn settled down and held the Falcons’ batters in check the rest of the way to improve to 3-2 on the season.
Koeneman’s towering first inning blast to centerfield, his fifth on the season, cleared the pine trees that are lined up past the outfield fence at Don Doyle Field. It was easily the longest hit ball of the season at the field and one of the longest of Koeneman’s storied two-and-a-half year high school career.
The pop in sophomore Fox’s bat came as a bit of a surprise and broke a 3-3 late-inning tie. Senior catcher Josh Black also made a big play for the Eagles, throwing out a Falcons’ base runner trying to reach scoring position with an attempted steal of second base in the middle innings. Black’s throw from his catcher position was dead-on and beat the Fulton runner by half a step. Black has not had a base stolen on him all season.
