Seymour struggles to third place finish

SCHS boys and girls golf teams place second in district tournament A 29-1 regular season record was all but forgotten Monday at the District 3 A-AA Tournament at Three Ridges Golf Course in Knoxville as the Seymour Eagles struggled to a third place overall finish. By virtue of their third place finish, the Eagles, who finished with a team total of 340, will get another chance to advance to the state next Tuesday in the region tournament, also to be held at Three Ridges. Tournament winner Gibbs (330) and runner up Carter (335) will also advance to the region round. “It was as bad as we’ve played all year,” said Seymour assistant coach Lee Ramsey. “Everybody’s score was really bad.” The Eagles best individual score Monday was Willie Sexton’s round of 83, which was the fifth best total among the 40 individual competitors. Ramsey said the team’s disappointing outing should serve as motivation for the region tourney next week. “We’re going to be spending a lot of time at Three Ridges this week practicing,” Ramsey said. “We’re going to live there this week. “But golf can change on a dime,” Ramsey continued. “They’ll have to put together a great day (at the region tournament) but this group is capable of doing so.” Monday’s tournament was the first such outing for every member of the Seymour team except senior Josh Giles. Ramsey said the competition will get much tougher at next week’s region event where the Eagles will compete against the likes of Knox-Catholic, CAK and Anderson County, as well as Gibbs and Carter. The Lady Eagles will also advance to the region after a second place overall finish Monday. Leah Festa (93) and Jessica Carr (100) led Seymour (193) to a runner up finish behind Gibbs (185). SCHS boys and girls teams place second The Sevier County golf squads narrowly missed out on a district tournament championship Monday at Eagles Landing. Hank Parker and Chad Pickens each turned in scores of 39 and Thomas Laughlin and Andrew Rayborn had matching rounds of 41 to bring the Smoky Bears (160) within one stroke of tournament champion West (159). Chelsea Davis (47) and Nicole Suiter (52) helped the Lady Bears (99) secure a region berth with a second place team finish. William Blount (98) was tournament champions.
