Lady Vols tennis to host

Tennessee welcomes seven teams to Knoxville for three-day tournament The University of Tennessee Lady Vol tennis team is readyto get back on the courts this year with the 2005 St. Mary’s Classic inKnoxville.  Tennessee will be up against some tough competition in thisyear’stournament in Purdue, Rice, North Carolina State, Kentucky, North Carolina,Furman, and Wake Forest.  Five of those teams competed in last year’s NCAAtournament, with Kentucky and North Carolina each advancing to thequarterfinals.  Five of the eight teams participating were also among thetop50 in the 2005 ITA NCAA Division I final rankings. The Lady Vols saw success in their tournament last year, taking a pair ofsingles titles and three doubles titles.  Senior Melissa Schaub and junior Vicky Jones each won their respectiveflights.  In doubles competition, former Lady Vols Sabita Maharaj and AshleyRobards, Jones and junior Blakeley Griffith, and Schauband sophomore Bryce Marable won their respective flights. Tennessee finished last season with a 15-9 record and advanced to the secondround of the NCAA Tournament and finished in the 18th spot of the 2005 ITArankings.  This year, the Lady Vols return five letter winners who combinedforan 89-53 record in singles play.  Two newcomers are welcomed to the team inStephanie Harris and Samantha Orlin Following this weekend’s action, the Lady Vols head to Greenville, S.C., andthe Furman Fall Classic from Sept. 30-Oct. 2.
