Walters State softball team splits a doubleheader

Morristown — It was the first conference game for both teams. In game one, Beth Williams pitched a six-hit shutout. Sarah Hoskins had a home run, and Amber Quillen had a double. Beth Williams was 2-3. For Columbia State, Ashly Burton was 2-3. In the second game, Columbia State jumped out to an early lead by putting three runs on the board in the first inning, and it looked as if the Lady Chargers were going to run away with the game early. But in the sixth the Lady Senators rallied for four runs to tie the game at 7 runs each. Neither team scored in the seventh forcing an eighth inning. With light running out, Columbia State rallied for four runs to take the lead 11-7. Walters State could one muster one run in the eighth giving the Lady Chargers the win 11-8. For the day, Beth Williams got the win in the first game and the loss in the second. Jessie Shelton got a no-decision for the second game. Blair Calloway and Amber Quillen each had a double, and Jennifer Antal had a home run. For Columbia State, Jennifer Gregory had a double and a homer. Lori Lindsey and Jenny Cavanaugh had a home run each. Amanda Vaught gets the loss in game one, and Mindy Wyrick took the win in the second game. Columbia State now has a record of 1-1(1-1) and the Lady Senators are 1-3 (1-1).
Cleveland — The Senators baseball team split a pair in a doubleheader. The Cougars took the first game 2-1 and the Senators, behind some brilliant pitching by Philip Utley, won the second game 5-0. In game one, the Senators scored one run in the first, and the Cougars pushed a run across the plate in the fifth. Then in the bottom of the seventh, Michael Courtney delivers a game winning base hit to lift the Cougars over the Senators 2-1. Both Doodle Hicks (2-1) and Kevin Hammons (2-1) went the distance for their respective teams. Hammons gets the win while Hicks takes the loss. In game two, Philip Utley had a complete-game shutout and gave up only one hit. The Senators won 5-0. Utley fanned 6 batters. He had help from C J Lee who had a two-run homer in the second, and Tyler Westmoreland had a solo shot in the sixth. Utley (2-1) picked up his second win of the season. Brandon Langston (1-1) took the loss. The Senators are now 7-2 (1-2) and Cleveland State is 6-3 (2-1).
Tullahoma—It took overtime for the Senators to beat the Bucks, 84-79, and the Lady Senators made it a close game edging the Lady Bucks 89-87. For the Lady Senators Vickie Blanchard had 22 points including a pair of 3-pointers. Katy McInnis had 18 points with a pair of treys. Cortney Brown added 11 and Brittany Frazier had 10. The Lady Senators improve to 24-3 (13-1). For Motlow State, Leanne Pelham led all scorers with 26 points including two 3’s. Ashley Nichols had 16, Diedra Ward had 14 and Monica Westbrook had 10. The Lady Bucks fall to 13-8 (9-5). In the men’s game, Ralph Legg, with 1.8 seconds on the clock, sinks the bucket to tie the game at 71 apiece. Legg finished with 26 points. He had three 3-pointers. Wadale Williams scored 21 and Adron Marshall added 10 points. The Senators are 22-5 (11-3). For Motlow State, Jeremy Brown led all scorers with 25. 12 of those points came from beyond the 3-point arc. Audrius Maneikas had 14 points. Nathan Hancock and DeCorey Young had 11 points each. The Bucks go to 14-9 (8-6).
