Walters State Community College (12-4) continued their winning ways for the 2004-05 season as they won a big game against the Volunteer State Pioneers on Sunday, December 19 taking the win 91-68.
The Senators relied on the play of forward Darryl Sommerset as he set the pace for the team with 24 points, with four other players for the Senators getting into the double digits. Guard Ralph Legg hooped 15 points with Thomas Haynes just behind him with 14. Wadale Williams and James Helton followed the two with 13 and 12 respectfully.
The Senators had the stats all go in their favor as the team shot double the free throws as the Pioneers and played off a lot of turnovers by the opposing team. The Senators were deadly with the ball after scoring 22 points off of turnovers by the Pioneers. The pioneers were only able to muster 12 points off turnovers by Walters State.
Walters State was able to rely on the bench, with players coming off and scoring 34 points to Volunteer State’s 25 points in the game.
At the buzzer for the first half the Senators were ahead 48-35 and never looked back in the second half of the game. The Pioneers couldn’t get close enough to challenge for the lead as the team made several mistakes giving up the ball in crucial situations.
Sommerset was able to keep the ball in the air as he shot 11 of 16 and got 2 of his five free throws from the line.
The Lady Senators (12-1) weren’t to be outdone by the men as they came storming out against the Volunteer State Lady Pioneers. The first half of the game was the big scoring gain as the lady’s outscored the Lady Pioneers 32-18 at the buzzer.
Victoria Blanchard led the Lady Senators with 13 points; shooting 5 of 11 from the floor including 3 out of 5 three points plays. Brittany Frazier followed her with 10 points, not fairing well on the floor, shooting only 2 for 10 shots, but aiding the cause at the free throw line shooting 6 for 6.
The second half of the game was more of the same as the Lady Senators outscored the Lady Pioneers 47-28 and taking the win to the house 79-46.
