The Memphis Spring Fling will be getting a full dose of Sevier County athletes this week as it hosts the TSSAA spring sports championships. Pigeon Forge is sending Shane Canterbury in the shot put after he collected a second place at Regionals with a 43 foot heave. Canterbury’s toughest competition will come from Terence Crawford of Frazier who has gone over 50 feet this season. The shot put competition for A-AA will be held at Briarcrest Christian School on Thursday afternoon. Besides the baseball team, Seymour is also sending high jumper Jessi Peterson who finished runner up at regionals last week with a jump of 4’10. The high jump is set for 10:30 Thursday morning. Gatlinburg-Pittman has their boys tennis team on the way to compete in the final four. They will face off against the winner of Chattanooga Christian and Marshall County on Tuesday morning at the Hutchison School. The winner advances to the finals to meet the winner of Crockett County and David Lipscomb on Tuesday afternoon. Kunal Jardosh of G-P will also be competing as the singles tennis winner from Region 1. He will meet Stan Goss of CSAS at 11 a.m. on Wednesday. A win would put him up to meet the winner of Andrew Resseguie of Lenoir City and Marcus Deadrick of Ridgeway at 4 p.m. The championship match is scheduled for Thursday morning. Sevier County had several others that were a win or inches away from trips to Memphis. Billy Price of Pigeon Forge in the triple jump, Todd Sherman of G-P in the two mile run, David Minton of Seymour in the 200 and Seymour’s 4-by-200 relay team of Caleb Moore, Chris Smith, Aaron Lee and Minton. Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg-Pittman both had their soccer teams on the cusps of the state tournament. Sevier County High School track standout Brooke Wilhoit put up a strong effort in the pentathlon but fell just a few points short of making the trip.
