In a week that could have been a chance for Seymour to fine tune their overall game in preparation for this weeks pivotal match-ups with Alcoa and Gibbs, the 16-5 Lady Eagles were able to give some ailing players rest while pounding Pigeon Forge, Fulton and Rutledge by a combined margin of 171-83.
“I’d like to win the rest of them like that,” said Seymour coach Randy Moore. “We were missing three players: Rachel Ketron, Alesha Norwood and Reija Rounela, who were out with the flu against Rutledge. We played some good defense all week and were able to get all of the players a chance to pick up some minutes.”
Seymour, who had beaten Pigeon Forge by just one point in an earlier meeting, turned a 14-5 first quarter lead into a 31-12 halftime advantage. Seymour failed to hit double-digits in either the third or fourth quarters, but still managed to outscore the Lady Tigers 8-5 in the third, and despite allowing Pigeon Forge to claim an 11-9 fourth quarter advantage, held on for the 48-28 win.
Seymour scoring: Brooke Johnson 20; Rachel Ketron 3; Ashley Murphy 7; Shandan Notgrass 1; Gina Ownby 2; Jessi Peterson 6; Reija Rounela 3; Danielle Wolfe 4; Heather Wright 2.
Pigeon Forge scoring: Whitney Dodgen 2; Lauren Fleming 11; Brianna Garrison 6; Sylvia Henry 2; Haley Johnson 2; Shanae Rayfield 3; Iris Reeves 2.
The 76-30 win over Fulton was the Lady Eagles’ biggest offensive outburst of the season, and their first time to score in the 70’s since a 72-16 win over Union County in the first game of the year.
Seymour, who had knocked off the winless Lady Falcons 62-14 in an earlier meeting, led 36-17 at halftime before exploding for 23 third quarter points to take a 59-22 lead. They used a 17-8 fourth quarter to get the 46-point win.
The Lady Eagles, playing without the three girls who were fighting the flu bug, made the road trip to Rutledge Thursday night and held the Lady Pioneers scoreless for the first eight minutes and knocked the home team out with a 21-point second quarter to lead 30-9 at the intermission. Moore again was able to clear his bench in the final two periods and coast back home with the 47-25 win.
Seymour scoring: Katie Clark 2; Chelsea Harrell 2; Brooke Johnson 20; Brittany Mikels 2; Ashley Murphy 5; Shandan Notgrass 5; Gina Ownby 2; Jessi Peterson 4; Danielle Wolfe 2; Heather Wright 3.
Rutledge scoring: Maura Jarnigan 4; Cynthia Vineyard 2; Heather Wice; Casey Wolfenbarger 4; Eliz Wolfenbager 8.
