The Lady Eagles of Seymour went 3-0 in the Pilot Food Mart Classic this past week at Catholic High School.
In the third game against Catholic, the Blue and Gold (10-4) was led once again by star senior point guard Casie Cowan with a perfect night from the floor.
The senior hit 11 of 11 from the field including 6 of 6 from the 3 point line for a total of 31 points giving the Seymour Lady Eagles a 53-29 victory over the Lady Irish (7-6).
The Classic did not have an All-Tournament team or MVP selection but Seymour Coach Andy Rines felt it was obvious who would have gotten the award. “If they had given awards, it would have been a no-brainer. Cowan was dominate all week-the best she’s ever played.”
Seymour got up early 13-0 because of their press creating a lot of turnovers. Cowan and Brown got in early foul trouble so the Lady Eagles had to go to a 1-2-2 zone for a while and it was effective.
They also got good effort from Ballard who scored 9 points. Coach Rines said, “We got some big shots out of Jordan Ballard. She hit some shots at key times to keep us up there. We kept shooting it good and we played very good defense.”
In the second game, Seymour beat Anderson County 54-46. The first half was fairly close (25-22). Then in the third quarter, the Lady Eagles erupted for 22 points which blew the game open against the overmatched Lady Mavs.
Senior point guard sensation Casie Cowan only scored 5 points the first half. In the third quarter however, she regained her star status by scoring a shocking 18 points including four 3 pointers. By the end of the third quarter, the Lady Eagles had stretched their lead to 47-36. Seymour held on to take the win.
Cowan scored 24 points, Brown 14 and Ballard 10. In the first game of the three day tournament, the Lady Eagles defeated Powell 52-44. They were led by whom else, Casie Cowan with 34 points.
Again the Lady Eagles blew the game open in the third quarter with a 15-3 run after trailing 28-26 at halftime.
The Seymour Eagles (4-6) boys’ team also opened the Classic with a win over the Powell Panthers (3-7).
Skylar Brown scored six of the Eagles last eight points of the quarter to help push the team up 22-15 by halftime.
The score was tied 35-35 in the fourth, then the Eagles hit 8 of 10 free throws to go back up 43-36. “We’re getting there” Seymour Coach Brian Jessie said after the win. His team lost to Powell the first time they played them. “The first time we played them, we were limited defensively, and we still don’t have our entire system installed, but as we go along we’ll be more versatile. We’re getting there.”
Hillard led the team with 12 points while Brown added 11 and Jenkins 10.
