The so-called 'Battle of the Border,' actually turned out to be no battle at all for the Seymour Eagles Friday night as they physically 'ran' away with a 35-0 victory over the South-Doyle Cherokees.
On a field that normally, never drains well after heavy rains, the Eagle offense found some stable ground to launch their cleats into to punch a win into the district 'win' column in order to improve their playoff hopes.
With lots of media on hand from the surrounding agencies, even they had problems battling the elements and swampy conditions to even get a glimpse from the sidelines in the cold, yet brutal conditions.
One thing the media did witness, however, was a close first half, when the visiting Eagles managed a Dustin Fain score on a two yard run and score to go up 7-0.
Blake Overton would later find a spongy end-zone for yet another score from four yards out to take 14-0 lead to the locker room.
Coach Jim Moore took his squad to the locker room and dried out the cool Eagles, but they came back out hotter and warmer than ever, to post three more scores that silenced the home standing Cherokees.
Injured senior Keegan Newport once again proved to be too much for the S-D defense when he race into the end zone from several yards out to give the visiting Eagles a 21-0 lead.
The Eagles would later pad their lead in the final frame on a TD pass to Blake Overton, and a three yard run and final score from the Eagles on a Lee Knight dive to pay dirt to close out the contest.
Head coach Jim Moore told the Herald that his team still has a lot of work to do. "We'll take this win. Our kids played great, but the season is just now beginning. When you look at our schedule this year and see a loss to Daniel Boone (ranked 7th in the state), CAK (ranked 5th in the state), Sevier County a (6-A team, ranked # 5 in the state), then you really want to be proud of this team thus far. “
“What a district we have to play in," Moore continued. "We will need the help of our fans this Thursday night in order to beat Cherokee. First of all, it's homecoming, second of all, it's senior night, and finally it's a win we need in order to make room for a play-off scenario. I want to invite all of the Seymour faithful to the game and help us make a difference in the outcome.”
“Our fans have been great this year." Moore concluded. Kick-off is set for 7:30.
