published: February 21 2007
Elizabeth Maxwell Smedberg, (1908-2007), daughter of the late Arthur and Bessie Ball Maxwell of Johnson City, Tennessee, made the transition from this life to the next on Wednesday, February 21, 2007 at Mountain Brook Retirement Village in Sevierville, Tennessee. She was a graduate of Johnson City High School and during her husband’s career attended the Universities of Missouri and Nebraska. Elizabeth traveled extensively with him in the United States and abroad, and after his death she continued her travels with special friends Lloyd and Barbara Blaker. She had been a faithful and beloved member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Gatlinburg since 1972 when she and her husband moved to Tennessee from Jamestown, NY upon retirement. Lib’s beautiful smile, sweet spirit, and eternally optimistic attitude will always be a cherished inspiration for those who knew her. Libby especially loved the staff in Assisted Living at Mountain Brook Retirement Village commenting often how dear, kind, and loving they were. Preceding her in death were her husband Merle Smedberg, brothers John Maxwell and Clifford Maxwell, sisters Gladys McDaniel and Julia Croasdell. Survivors are a niece Dr. Martha McDaniel Woodward, nephews John McDaniel and Jim Maxwell, grandnieces and grandnephews, and several cousins including Mack and Betts Sharpe. The family will receive friends 5-7 PM Friday at Atchley Funeral Home in Sevierville. Family and friends will meet 2 PM Saturday in Oak Hill Cemetery in Johnson City, TN, for graveside service and interment with Dr. Martha Woodward officiating. Memorial service 10:30 AM Sunday at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Gatlinburg with her pastor Rev. Arne Walker officiating. Arrangements by Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville.
