Services for Dr. James A. Newman will be held, January 03, 2008, at 02:00 PM at the following locations: Church Street United Methodist Church 900 Henley Street Knoxville, TN 37902 865-524-3048 Newman, Dr. James A. of Knoxville, passed away Monday, December 31, 2007 at the Ben Atchley State Veterans Nursing Home. Survived by his wife, Jacqueline Tipton Newman; son, Harry James and wife Diane Newman of Maryville; daughter, Teressia Newman Blair of Atlanta; grandchildren, Christopher and wife Kristin Newman, Charleston, SC, Stephanie and husband Craig Williams, Canton, MS, James Adam Blair, Canton, GA; great-grandson, Walter; great-granddaughter, Stella Williams, Canton, MS. Preceded in death by parents, O.C. and Kittie Newman; brothers, Harold, Charles, and Johnnie; sisters, Kate Hancock and Christine Miller. Dr. Newman is a Navy veteran. He is a member of Church Street United Methodist Church and Murphy Builders Sunday School Class. Dr. Newman was a dedicated educator who received his B.S. Degree from Maryville College, M.S. from University of Tennessee, LL.D. from Lincoln Memorial University. Dr. Newman began his 42 year career as a teacher and coach at Alcoa High School. He became principal of Townsend, Norris and Fulton High School; superintendent of Anderson County Schools and Knoxville City Schools. He was a member of ETEA, TEA, and life member of NEA and PTA. He served on the Board of St. Mary’s Hospital and Board of St. Mary’s School of Nursing. He served on the Board of Trustees Tennessee Consolidated Retirement System, and was President of Concord-Farragut AARP. In 1999, Fulton High School honored him by dedicating the James A. Newman Cultural Development Room which contains memorabilia covering his 13 years as principal. Dr. Newman loved to travel; he planned numerous trips including his favorite to Russia. He and Jacqueline were able to visit many places before he suffered strokes in 1999 and 2000. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Church Street United Methodist Church on Thursday, January 3, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. Dr. William Fowler and Rev. Cabel Trent officiating. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial may be sent to Knox County Retired Teachers Scholarship Fund for students who seek a teacher’s degree.
