Kenneth Ross Newton

Newton, Kenneth Ross ?age 83, of Knoxville, Tennessee, passed away on Saturday, June 17, 2006. He was born on March 13, 1923 in Hamilton, Ohio. Dr. Newton was an Army veteran of World War II. Serving from 1943 to 1946, he was assigned to Oak Ridge, Tennessee, in the Specialist Engineering Detachment for the Manhattan Project. It was in Oak Ridge, during the war, that he met his wife of 61 years. Upon being Honorably Discharged from the Army, Dr. Newton pursued his college education on the GI Bill. He attended Tulsa University from 1946-1950. He also attended the University of Tennessee from 1950 to 1953 where he received a PhD in Psychology. Dr. Newton joined the University as an Assistant Professor of Psychology in 1953. He became a full Professor and was the Director of the University?s Psychological Clinic from 1963-1973. Dr. Newton retired from the University of Tennessee in 1988 with 35 years of service, after which he continued his work in private practice and teaching human relations part-time in the UT evening school. Dr. Newton worked with many organizations throughout the area including the Knox County Schools and Superintendent Mildred Doyle, Child and Family Services, and the University of Tennessee Oncology Department. Preceding him in death were his parents and his son, Earl Rick Newton. He is survived by his wife, Mary Newton, of Knoxville; three daughters, two sons, son-in-law and daughter-in-law, Patricia Newton of Nashville, Ross Newton of Ripley, Ohio, Randy and Michele Neal of Alcoa, Tennessee, Kevin and Glenda Newton of Maryville, Tennessee and Maureen Newton of Jacksonville, Alabama and Alcoa, Tennessee; seven grandchildren, Kelly Douglass, Rachel Newton, Jason Newton, Jennifer Newton, William Newton, Alex Newton, and Julia Newton; and five great-grandchildren, Benjamin Bidwell, Nate Douglass, Zachary Douglass, Austin Newton and Alyssa Newton. A memorial celebration of Ken?s life will be held Thursday evening, June 22nd, at John XXIII Catholic Church from 6-9 PM. A memorial mass at the church will be held Friday morning at 11:15 AM with Father Eric P. Andrews CSP officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Kevin Newton, Ross Newton, Randy Neal, Bill Poppen, David Buckwalter and Michael O?Connell. Flowers may be sent to John XXIII Catholic Center, 1710 Melrose Place, UT Campus, Knoxville, Tennessee 37916 or in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Friends of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, P.O. Box 5650, Sevierville, Tennessee 37864. Arrangements by Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway.
