Charles Robert Wardell, Jr.

Wardell, Jr., Charles Robert, age 78, of South Knoxville passed away Wednesday, March 23, 2005 at his home from complications of ALS (Lou Gehrigs) disease. Mr. Wardell was a longtime member and deacon of Broadway Baptist Church, where he also faithfully attended the Adult IV Sunday School class. He was a veteran of the United States Navy and was retired with 46 years of service with ORNL and was a fifty-year member of IBEW. Charles was also an honorary member of the Pearl Stout Union of the WCTU for many years. He was proud to be the mascot ?Strawberry Muffin? of the VOLS Red Hat Society. He was a 32nd degree mason of the Oriental Lodge and a member of the Acacia May chapter of the Eastern Star. He was preceded in death by parents, Charles Robert Sr. and Anna Mae Palmer Wardell; sister, Charlotte Mae Daily; wives, Mabel Wardell and Robbie O. Wardell. He is survived by loving and devoted wife, Phyllis Tanner-Wardell; stepdaughter, Lynda Cole and family; nephews, Chris and wife, Sabrina, Matthew and Dustin Miller; his loving church family; special caregiver, Fay Damewood; his Shoney?s family and Lunch Bunch, Caroline Miller, Corrine Belcher, Bill and Shirley Perry; and his faithful companion, ?Molly?. Special thanks to Dr. Richard Bedlock and staff at Duke University Hospital, Durham, North Carolina, Dr. Sibyl Wray and staff, and Covenant Home Hospice. Friends may call at their convenience on Friday at Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway. The family will receive friends from 12:30-2:00 PM on Saturday, Broadway Baptist Church, with funeral service to follow at 2:00 PM, Pastor Tim Turley, Pastor Tim Bounds, and Chaplain Ernie Coleman officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. Deacons will serve as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Broadway Baptist Church, 815 Broadway NE, Knoxville, Tennessee 37917.
