John Franklin Shular, age 84 of Sevierville, died Wednesday, September 15, 2004. He served on the Sevier County Court in the late 60’s/early 70’s, he served as a county deputy under 2 sheriffs (Bat Gibson and Carman Townsend), was a life-long farmer, builder, and carpenter, and worked placing power poles for the electric system in the 1950’s. He always placed tobacco and hay in the Sevier County Fair where he enjoyed all of the exhibits and attended every year. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church and also attended Love Chapel Baptist Church. He helped build the original Antioch Baptist Church. He was a resident of Sevier County Health Care Center in 1997, recuperating from a truck accident in which he broke his neck—he was very active at the nursing home even during his recuperation. He always wanted to do something for someone else and even after his discharge home in 1998 he continued to return to the nursing home every Thursday to help the dietary department distribute meal trays to the residents. An unusual occurrence also during his nursing home stay was that his 96 year old mother, Anna B. Shular, was also a patient and they had quite a good time before she went home to be with Papaw in December, 1997.
