Arlie Lee Wiginton

Wiginton, Arlie Lee, Jr., age 84 died Friday, March 21, 2003 at Baptist Hospital. He was born on December 14, 1918 in Hackleburg, Alabama to Arlie Lee and Hattie Jeannette Spratlin Wiginton. He graduated from the University of Alabama and taught Junior High School Science for two years before entering the U.S. Army in 1941. He served in Army Intelligence in England, Iceland, France, and Germany, landing two weeks after D-Day. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and numerous other engagements, earning a Purple Heart and Good Conduct Medal. He began work in cost accounting for TVA after the war and retired in 1981. After retirement he and his wife enjoyed traveling to Europe and the Far East. He enjoyed gardening and was an excellent bridge player and an avid Lady Vols fan. He was a Volunteer in the Soup Kitchen at Church Street United Methodist Church and for Mobile Meals. He was a member of Church Street United Methodist Church and the Murphy Builders Sunday School class for over 50 year. Wife of 56 years, Catherine Carlton Wiginton; children: Catherine Wiginton Wilbourne (William) of Eufaula, Alabama; Mary Carlton Wiginton of Knoxville; Jane Wiginton Scamehorn (Bruce) of Winter Haven Florida; Clyde Hall Wiginton of Knoxville; Eugenia Wiginton Ford (Phil) of Knoxville; grandchildren: Trevan Lee Wiginton, and Nolan T. Wiginton of Knoxville; Jefferson Lee Wilbourne (Carly) and Michael K. Wilbourne of Eufaula, Alabama; Ryan Scamehorn and Scott Scamehorn of Winter Haven, Florida; great-grandchildren: Tylin Elizabeth Wilbourne, Madelaine Claire and Jack Stewart Scamehorn; one brother, Eugene Wiginton of Richmond, Virginia; two sisters: Mary Lou Oswalt of Gardendale, Alabama and Betty Brown of Arcadia, Florida; 3 nieces, 3 nephews. A memorial service will be held on Monday at 10:00 AM at Church Street United Methodist Church with Dr. William Fowler and Rev. Cabel Trent officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Soup Kitchen at Church Street United Methodist Church, 900 Henley Street, Knoxville, TN 37902. Arrangements by Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway.
