Mattie Qualls Carter

Carter, Mattie Qualls, age 106, passed away at Hillcrest South Nursing Home, Wednesday evening, April 17, 2002. Mattie was born in Big Stone Gap, Virginia on October 8, 1895. She married Aden Gaines Carter of Hummel, Kentucky on August 16, 1912. They had three children, Virgil Carter who passed away at 14 years of age, Myrtle Carter Adams of Knoxville, Tennessee and Aden Gaines Carter, Jr. of Big Stone Gap, Virginia. Mattie had made her home with her daughter, Myrtle Adams since 1985 in Knoxville. Mattie and her husband owned and operated Carter’s Shoe Shop on Main Street in Appalachia, Virginia for 30 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Elisha and Alwildie Qualls; brother, Lee Qualls and sister, Della Wilson. Son, Aden and daughter, Myrtle; grandsons, Aden Adams and wife, Ann of Jacksonville, Florida; David and Carrie Carter of Piney Flats, Tennessee; granddaughters, Glenda Hughes of Strawberry Plains, Tennessee; Gay and husband, Bill Hawes of Eustes, Florida; and grandson, Gary Carter and wife, of Memphis, Tennessee; and six great grandchildren. Funeral service Friday, 8:00 PM, Berry Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Robert Countiss officiating. Interment Saturday, 2:00 PM, Riverview Cemetery, East Stone Gap, Virginia, with Rev. Hugh Bowers officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway.
