Fred Kautz

Kautz, Frederick Alton, age 90, of Knoxville, died Monday, July 30, 2001, at his home following a long illness with Parkinson’s Disease. He was one of the oldest active members of Island Home Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving with the Seabees in the Pacific during WWII. He was a co-manager of Island Home Airport with Henry Frank Wattenbarger, owner, for many years until Mr. Wattenbarger’s death in 1961. He was also Vice President of U.S. Flying Service, Inc. at Island Home Airport from 1956 through 1961. Preceded in death by father, George J. Kautz; mother, Lillian Salyer Kautz; brothers, Aubrey Kautz, Sr., and Bernard Kautz of Morehead, Kentucky. Survived by loving wife of 54 years, Irene Wattenbarger Kautz; son, Frederick A. Kautz II, and wife Carol Ann Messere Kautz of Harvard, Massachusetts; daughter, Carolyn Rose Kautz Harrell, and husband Dr. Donald R. Harrell, of Knoxville; grandchildren, Catherine Anne Kautz, Elizabeth Jane Kautz, Heather Rose Harrell, Hayley Marie Harrell, Hillary Anne Harrell, Hogan Donald Harrell, and Hudson Tyler Harrell; and sister, Lillian Rose Kautz Holley of Huntington, West Virginia. Funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday at Island Home Baptist Church, 2323 Island Home Avenue, with Rev. Dwight Jenkins and Dr. W.C. Garland officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Memorial Cemetery, 5315 Kingston Pike, with Military Honors by the East Tennessee Veterans Honor Guard and a fly-over by Barry Sanders and two fellow pilots. Active pallbearers will be Frederick A. Kautz II, Dr. Donald R. Harrell, Charles “Bud” Cheatham, Stuart Butcher, Glen Barnes, and Dr. Walter Hawthorne. Honorary pallbearers will be Hugh Lunsford, Barney Weaver, Farrell Sanders and O.S. “Syl” Baldridge.
