William F. Hutson

HUTSON, WILLIAM F., M.D. - the last surviving original co-author of the Great Smoky Mountain Wildflower book, died April 22, 2001 in Northbrook, Ill. A long time hiking companion of co-author, Carlos Campbell, it was Dr. Hutson who initiated the project. The other co-author was University of Tennessee Botany Professor, Dr. Aaron Sharp. Since it was first published in the early 1960's, this book has been the most used guide to the Wildflowers in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park as well as locally. The work on the current fifth edition was completed in 1995. It was a retirement project of his with his son, Robert and Dr. Sharp. Dr. Hutson was born to Grace Truman Whitlock Hutson and Rev. Andrew Carter Hutson on November 30, 1913 at his maternal grandparent's farm in Grainger Co., Tenn. Dr. Hutson was a graduate of the University of Tennessee, University of North Carolina and Northwestern University Medical School and served in the Navy in both WWII and Korea. Prior to going to medical school, he worked for the Tenn. Public Health Dept. doing malarial surveys in Tenn. River Valley. Upon completion of medical school and a residency at Evanston Hospital, Dr. Hutson joined the staff a Swedish Covenant Hospital where he served as the chairman of the Dept. of Radiology until his retirement in 1980. Dr. Hutson was also active in many professional organizations and community activities. Preceding his in death is his wife, Ann Katherine Leopold Hutson (daughter of Elsie Tillery Leopold and Herman Leopold); step mother, Mallie C. Hutson; sister, Mary K. Hutson and brothers, Andrew C. Hutson, Jr. and John Hutson all of Knoxville. He is survived by his son, Robert Hutson of Northbrook, Ill.; sister, Sarah Hutson Reynolds; brother, Dr. Charles Hutson; sisters in law, Margaret Leopold Orr and Pauline Hutson Witt; nephew, Edward Orr; nieces, Carolyn Hutson Clifford, Mary Reynolds Johnson, Laura Hutson, Janine Orr (Richmond, Va.); great nieces, Professor Elizabeth Mynatt (Atlanta), Preston Patterson; great nephew, Henry Finn (Richmond, Va.) all of Knoxville except as noted. The funeral services were held at Northbrook Covenant Church in Ill. on Thursday, April 26. Friends will meet at 10:45 a.m. Tuesday May 1, at Lynnhurst-Greenwood Chapel and proceed to Lynnhurst Cemetery for an 11 a.m. graveside service with Dr. David Hull and Rev. Dave Ward of First Baptist Church officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Foothills Land Conservancy, 614 Sevierville Rd. Maryville, Tenn. 37804.
