McCarter, Mark Lowry, age 84, passed away Tuesday, April 17, 2001 at St. Mary's Residential Hospice. Born on the 4th of July 1916 in Piedmont, Jefferson County, TN. Mr. McCarter was an active member of First Baptist Church on Main Street for many years. A veteran of WWII having served with the U.S. Army, Company D, 66th Ordinance Battalion at Ft. Dix and 3404th Ordinance Battalion in Iceland. Employed for many years by Tennessee Coach Co. and later Trailways Bus Lines, from which he retired. He was an avid student of Tennessee and Civil War History, and was proud of his Southern Highlander heritage. A member of Charles McKinney Lodge and American Legion Post #2 for more than 50 years. Preceded in death by his father, Dr. Thomas L. McCarter; mother, Mary Meadows McCarter; brother, Chauncey D. McCarter; beloved first wife, Anna Collins McCarter. Survivors Funeral services 7:00 p.m. Friday at Berry Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. George Gilbert officiating. Interment 10:00 a.m. Saturday at the National Cemetery with military honors by the East TN Honor Guard.In lieu of flowers the family suggests that donations be made to the East TN Historical Society.The family will receive friends 4 to 7 p.m. Friday prior to the service in the Chapel of Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Hwy.www.berryfuneralhome.com
