Barbara M. Landauer

Landauer, Barbara M., age 85 of Seymour, died April 5, 1999. She was born November 21, 1913 in Halifax, Canada. She was preceded in death by parents Jack and Margaret Landauer and one older brother, Lawrence. Miss Landauer was a registered nurse for more than thirty years with the Veteran's Administration where she served in administrative positions. She was on the faculty of Indiana University. She was Chief of Nursing Education at the V.A. Hospital, Albany, NY. She also served as the Chief Nurse at the V.A. Hospitals in both Asheville, NC and Coatesville, PA. Prior to her experience in the government, she taught at Beth Israel Hospital, Newark, NJ and at Binghamton General Hospital, Binghamton, NY. Her contributions to nursing were numerous. During World War II she set up programs for the Cadet Nurse Corp. and also taught in these programs. Major interests were preparing registered nurses to serve in various specialties including intensive care. With the onset of the Community College Nurse programs, she worked with several programs in New York. She attended New York University and received a B.S. in Education. Her interest in the health phase of sports led her to Yale University, New Haven, CT where she received a Masters of Nursing. She also attained a Masters in Nursing Administration from Columbia University, New York. She was an active member of the American Nurses Association, and has published in the American Journal of Nursing. She also was a member of the National League of Nursing Education, Nursing Research and the Red Cross Nursing Corp. Miss Landauer retired in 1975 and joined her friend, Anna Schmidt. They traveled for three years throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Orient. In 1978, they purchased a home in Seymour, TN. where they became active supporters of the Lady Vols and members of the BoostHer Club serving on the Advisory Committee for several years. In 1992, they were selected for the BoostHer Club Hall of Fame. The Landauer/Schmidt endowment fund supports two scholarships in basketball, one in golf and one in softball. Her other interests were in the McClung Museum, Ijams, the Humane Society, Abused Women, Talking Books for Sevierville, Library and a scholarship for Seymour High School. Services will be held at 7:30 PM on Wednesday April 7, 1999 at Berry Funeral Home, South Knoxville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Humane Society, 800 Millwood Road, Knoxville, TN 37920. Friends will be received 7:00 - 7:30 PM Wednesday at Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Hwy.
