There has been talk for some time about the security at the Courthouse. That talk turned into action last Monday night at the County Commission meeting.
At a recent County Intergovernmental Committee meeting, County Mayor Larry Waters presented the panel with the concerns regarding security.
He has said "It's just a sign of the times.."
Discussions of several types of safety systems have occurred at all levels in the courthouse.
It appears that the favorite choice was the metal detector used at the entrance to the commissioner’s meeting room on the third floor of the courthouse.
Jack Anderson, a citizen in attendance wondered about the placement of the metal detector told the Seymour Herald. “I think it should be placed at the entrance to the courthouse, not on the third floor.”
Anderson felt that the commissioners were afraid of the general public. “By placing this metal detector here, it seems that the commissioner’s actions are going to be so grievous that they are anticipating major upheaval from the general public.”
Others say, it’s just a sign of the times. Sevier County is growing up.
“I’ve been going thru metal detectors for over 15 years in other court houses,” John A. Meyers told the Seymour Herald.

Don't most of the commissioners have metal plates in their heads, therefore eliminating the use of said device?
Larry Waters is right! We do need extra protection - from our elected officials. The thugs and bullies apparently think it is OK to deny citizens their right to speak and don't hesitate to slap them around if they insist on being heard.
You can lead a Hoss to Waters
But you can't make him think.
Thank goodness Sheriff Seals didn't have a weapon. The assault may have been manslaughter instead. The rage in his eyes as he assaulted Brad Lowe was scary.
Sheriff Seals should step down in disgrace.
He assaulted a citizen and I am a witness to that!
Of all the things that Brad Lowe has done I am surprised he hasn't been assaulted before.
Why was Brad Lowe hiding a video camera? Was it to purposely provoke a confrontation? Why did Brad Lowe call the news crew? To say Hoss needs to see a psychiatrist? I can think of two people that need to see a psychiatrist and neither of them are the sherriff. The news said brad Lowe got a chance to speak at the commissioners meeting but not for long-it didn't say that when he was talking about a female prisoner getting peppered sprayed in her vagina that there was a room full of 8 and 9 year old boy scouts at the meeting to learn about government.
As for the metal detectors at the courthouse-it definately needs them-especially when those employees see Brad Lowe or Clark King on the premises.
Obviously, you were not there and you got your "news" from the Mountain Press. You just stay in line like a good boy.
You are right I was not at the meeting which is probably a good thing as I probably would have gotten assault charges too if someone spoke to me the way they did Hoss. (FAT BOY)Did you miss that "mature" part? It was on the video sent to the news. But I did not get my information from the Mountain press.I actually saw the minutes to the meeting and watched the provoking video that played on the news. I think the shame should fall on Brad Lowe for his actions.Brad Lowe needs to get over it already he lost the election.
We can not forget that YOU Good Ole Boys voted these Good Ole Boys into office all on your own here. Power breeds corruption and absolute power breeds absolute corruption. Did you think Larry Waters was going to turn into a Saint after 30 years. Give me a break! You wanted him, you got him and now impeach him or enjoy him.
Stop trying to blame it on Seals, he is only trying to do a job that Bruce Almighty really screwed up. Let's remember you voted that tyrant into office as well. He even screwed you and made you pay to bury him. What a guy!
Why did the county commissioners not have to go thru the metal detectors too,
I'm more afraid of one of them
realizing they may go to prison and bring in a weapon and start shooting, most all are crooks, the sheriff was way out of line, let me ask you, what if a common citizen would have did the same to sheriff Seals if he were recording the meeting, I can tell you what would have happened, about 5 deputy's would have had a knee in your back on on your neck, while the others held you down and cuffed you, and drug you to jail,, why can the police do anything they want,at all...
and guess what no one will sign a warrant on the sheriff,
they say there policy is not to write warrants or criminal summons on any law enforcment
unless the D.A. aprroves it, now thats scary, so if you a cop you can do anything to anybody, with not much fear of getting charged, how's that fair, there should be equal treatment, if the roles were reversed, somebody would have went to jail, kicking and screaming,,,
the sheriff could be in trouble over this. and i liked him till now
For those who weren't there or have never been there, Lowe has recorded ALL the Lack-of-ethics meetings and several county commission meetings to have for anyone to see how our elected officals really do business. It's a shame that only about a hundred people see how the county commission takes care of their buddies. The video you should see is of county attorney Jerry McCarter insulting a female school teacher in an open meeting. This widow was only trying to get an opportunity to correct a wrong-doing by School Superintendant Jackie Parton. Lowe didn't contact the media, they called him. "r u kidding me" must support prisoner abuse to hold up for Seals. See the number of lawsuits your county is involved in as of now.
Metal detectors are so needed at the commission meetings. Think about it you have one commissioner who tried to get the veteran affairs job but did not get it so he has went after anyone in government since. He has bragged about carrying a illegal gun in his overhauls at all times. You have two people who regularly try to disrupt the meetings who got kicked out of Law Enforcement, ran for Sheriff, lost by large margins so they think they can Carry guns. You have a man who lost a Gatlinburg election who has been known to keep snakes in mail box. He has made it known to everyone that he is very anti government. The mail box thing is screaming “going postal”.
Bobby Jack, you may wish to check your facts. The Snake in the Mail box was placed there in the Early 1980's when a former City Commissioner tried to impose a nepotism policy in Gatlinburg. The Snake went missing for years but has re-surfaced as to where it was and we now know that it went missing as to prevent a Federal Crime from being charged against those who put it in the Mail box. As to going postal, your right on target! Hoss went postal and many more are soon to follow but it won't be me or Brad Lowe. Brad and I, along with a growing number of people are sick and tired of the manner in which this group runs our government. We are anti-corruption, not anti government. The only thing that Larry Waters, and the rest are hoping and have been hoping is that this will all go away. They can have their wish as soon as they start following the law as it is intended, not as they understand it. Hoss committed second degree assualt when he picked up the tripod and used it as a weapon. Anyone who would have done the same thing to the Sheriff would have gone to Jail. The only ones who acted childish were members of the Sevier County Sheriff's department as they attempted to get Brad Lowe to take a swing at one of them. Their little plan backfired and we will exaust all efforts to have Seals arrested as he should be. Maybe next time the County will have someone there to keep tabs on our Sheriff.
I thought it was an ethics detector. I didn't hear it go off once!
