officials urge public vigilance regarding water supply safety and utility security

In cooperation with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the City of Sevierville urges increased public awareness of the need to report suspicious activity at or around municipal water supply facilities, and electrical, natural/propane gas and telephone facilities.

According to a recent DHS assessment, local water, natural/propane gas, electrical and telephone service providers are encouraged to improve public awareness of the potential for terrorist interest and activity in these areas.

Citizens should immediately report any suspicious activity at or near water supply, natural/propane gas, electrical and telephone facilities, including fire hydrants, water mains and water supply lines, natural/propane gas, electrical and telephone substations and transmission lines, to local law enforcement officials. The Sevierville Police Department may be contacted at 865-453-5506. Emergencies may be reported by dialing 911.

The City of Sevierville will generally notify the public when scheduled, non-emergency maintenance is being performed by City personnel at water supply sites and equipment.

If you have any questions about this or any other Homeland Security issue, please contact SPD Lt. Ken Garner at 865-453-7310 extension 3108.
