SCPLS LITERARY CLASSIC BOOK CLUB MEETING

Sevier County, TN – Edith Wharton’s The House of Mirth will be the featured book for the SCPLS Literary Classics Book Club Meeting on Friday, August 29, 2008. This novel, published in 1905, was Wharton's first literary success.

The novel is set amid fashionable New York society and reveals the insincerity and negative effects of the city's social circle on the moral fiber of Lily Bart. Poor but well born, Lily must secure her future by acquiring a wealthy husband; but her downfall - instigated by a romantic indiscretion - results in gambling debts and social disasters.

The Sevier County Public Library System (SCPLS) Literary Classic Book Club will meet at the Kodak Branch Library, 319 West Dumplin Valley Road, on Friday, August 29, 2008 at 6:00 p.m. to discuss this novel.
