The new spotless, state of the art minimum security  jail was ready for the open house held by Sevier County Sheriff Ron Seals and some of his staff this past Monday.

Many came to see “what their tax dollars went for” and others were there “to just take a look”.

The new minimum security facility will hold 168 people when it opens. In the building will be two male dorms which will hold 60 inmates each, and two female dorms that will house 24 each.

The shell of a third male dorm has been built for future growth and the entire facility could eventually have 228 beds.

The inmates began transferring in to the new facility this Wednesday.

“I’m very pleased with the way it turned out, the systems as well as the entire facility and I think this will help relieve the over-crowding,” Sheriff Ron Seals told the Seymour Herald.

Beth Offner, of the Tennessee Rehabilitative Infinitive and Corrections was in attendance.

All the furnishing in the new Sevier County Jail were made by the state prison inmates.

Offner was there to view the final products.

The county purchased 88 bunk beds with matching mattresses and 20 tables with stools. The beds were assembled by local trustees. The bolts were spot welded to assure security.

With two jails, the sheriff made some operational changes.

“Traditionally we had a Deputy Chief to function as a jail administrator and take care of other items within the department. Now that we have two different facilities, we have separated that to one Deputy Chief, Larry McMahan, will only take care of these new facilities, the jail administration and oversee the operations,” stated Sheriff Seals.

“We felt that since we’ve grown, we needed more hands on,” stated the Sheriff. “He (McMahan) couldn’t be in two places at once and get the job done.”

The new facility added a total of 29 new staff members. Three cooks; two nurses, and 24 corrections officers.

The price tag for the new location is around $3.2 million.

Captian Parton is the operations captain for the new facilities. Captian Hatcher is the Captian of Operations in the downtown facility.

Well lets see... was built to hold 168, guess that means at least 350 might be jammed into it if it's anything like the old jail! Great to know that the lucky transfers will have a bunk beds with mattresses considering so many at the old jail have and probably will still be sleeping on thin foam mats on the concrete floors!

That is why it is called a jail and not a Holiday Inn stupid! Don't do the crime and you won't have to do the time. Real easy to figure out!

That is right, let their sorry as*%@ sleep on the floor. It's their own fault they are there to begin w/.
They should be so lucky to get a mat to sleep on and a blanket, feed them bread and water... Thats what is wrong w. this country, to many BLEEDING HEARTS... It's call punishment, make them pay the consequences of their actions. Don't make it clean and cosy, make it dirty and unconfortable, so they will learn their lesson and NOT want to come back or, MAKE A CAREER OUT OF IT.....DUH...

Are they taking advanced reservations and if so where is Garry Cate on the list?

I think we should torture all the prisoners at both the jails just like they do at the old one. Let em all eat crap and starve, except for the jailers , they need their country hams and Pepsis to keep up enough stregnth to torture all the bad criminals. They shouldnt give prisinors any medicins ether, I cant hardly pay for mine and I work sometimes.
