police provide summary of recent dui checkpoint

The City of Sevierville Police Department (SPD) participated in a multi-jurisdictional DUI checkpoint on Friday, August 31, 2007.

The SPD, along with the Sevier County Sheriff's Department and the Tennessee Highway Patrol, conducted the checkpoint on West Main Street near the City limit.

The checkpoint was conducted from 11:00PM - 1:00AM. 10 warnings and 36 citations were issued. Citations were issued for expired registration, revoked or suspended drivers license, not wearing safety belts and other violations.

Five persons were arrested, including four DUI arrests.

A total of 872 vehicles passed through the checkpoint. Of those vehicles 5.5% were in violation in one way or another.

SPD Chief Don Myers was pleased with the results. "The cooperation shown by the agencies involved was outstanding," Chief Myers said. "To help ensure the safety of motorists in Sevierville, we plan to continue participating in these types of high visibility operations."

The SPD has received a grant from the Governor's Highway Safety Office to provide high visibility patrols. The SPD's participation in this checkpoint was part of this ongoing effort.
