Safe Routes to School

published: January 24 2007 12:00 AM updated:: January 24 2007 12:00 AM
Years ago it wasn’t uncommon for students to grab some breakfast and lace up their shoes for a brisk walk or bike ride to school each morning. Today, more parents are choosing to drive their children to school in lieu of the early morning trek to class. While this might not be a topic you would expect me to write about, in 2007 TDOT will begin awarding grants for the Safe Routes to School Program. The Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program provides grants to local, regional and state agencies for projects that are designed to encourage walking and biking to school among elementary and middle school children. These funds can be used for sidewalks, bike lanes, and cross walks, but can also be obtained for non-infrastructure projects such as training for crossing guards, public awareness campaigns, safety education programs or even law enforcement around schools. The SRTS program is funded with $10.7 million in federal funds through 2009. The grants provide 100% of the project funding and do no require a local match. TDOT will begin awarding the SRTS grants this year for both infrastructure and non-infrastructure projects which directly support increased biking and walking among children. TDOT is currently accepting grant applications for this first year of the Safe Routes to School program, but the deadline to apply is fast approaching. All applications are due to the Department by March 15, 2007 at 3:00 p.m. (CST). To obtain an application or to learn more about the program, visit our website at: www.tn.gov/tdot/bikeped/saferoutes.htm or call our program coordinator at (615) 253-2421. The Safe Routes to School program is an excellent opportunity for schools, communities and local and state leaders to work together to promote a healthier lifestyle for our school children and create a safer, cleaner environment for everyone.
