For the fourth consecutive year, the Sevier County Library System has invited Sevier County schoolchildren in kindergarten to 8th grade to participate in a contest in honor of National Children’s Book Week (CBW), celebrated every November. This year CBW was celebrated November 13-19, 2006 across the country.
Eight Sevier County schools including the following Northview Middle, Pi Beta Phi, Pigeon Forge Middle, Sevierville Primary, Sevierville Intermediate, Sevierville Middle, Seymour Primary, and Seymour Middle submitted a total of 965 entries.
The students in two separate grade categories (K—4th Grade) and (5th—8th Grade) were invited to design an original baseball card that included their favorite character from a book. The children were asked to draw their character for the front of the baseball card. The back of the card was left for the child to explain why this character was their favorite – what made the character memorable to the child. The 2006 Children’s Book Week theme was More Books Please!© by the Children’s Book Council.
This year, the Sevier County Public Library System invited Kenton Temple, Anna Porter Public Library Director and Dr. JoAn Trentham, Pigeon Forge Public Library Director as additional help in choosing the winning entries. The entries from Pi Beta Phi will be posted at the Anna Porter Public Library and the entries from the Pigeon Forge Middle School will be posted at the Pigeon Forge Public Library. All other entries across the county will be posted at the Sevier County Main Library, the Semour Branch Library and the Kodak Branch Library until the end of December.
Each student who submitted an entry will receive a certificate or participation. The top three winning entrants in each category will also receive ribbons and their baseball card design will be professionally published to be used in the Sevier County Library System, the Anna Porter Public Library and the Pigeon Forge Public Library. The student will also receive 30 copies of the baseball card to share with friends and family.
