Governor Bredesen elebrates National school lunch program

Governor Phil Bredesen has proclaimed October 9-13 2006 as National School Lunch Week for Tennessee in recognition of the program’s role in fostering the nutritional health and well-being of Tennessee students. The United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) School Lunch Program ensures all students have access to healthy low-cost or free meals. During this week, school systems across the state will provide fun and educational activities that support healthy and nutritious meals. This year’s theme is “Vote for School Lunch.” “Governor Bredesen’s proclamation underscores how important a child’s health is to his/her education,” Education Commissioner Lana Seivers said. “Across Tennessee, students know more about being physically active and smart food choices because of the spotlight he has placed on health. A nutritious diet, such as provided through the school lunch program, gives students the fuel they need to learn.” In Tennessee, more than 600,000 students participate in the National School Lunch Program each day. The campaign encourages students to participate in “Vote for School Lunch” to increase awareness of the nutritional value of these meals. “Child nutrition is a prominent health concern and we are fortunate to have the federally-funded School Lunch Program,” said Sarah White, director of school nutrition. “For some children, this lunch is their most nutritious, if not their only, meal of the day. Our hope is that the “Vote” campaign will help educate parents and students about the nutrition programs available in schools.” Pete Pizza, Sally Salad, Ricky Chicken, Heddi Spaghetti, and Rocco Taco are each campaigning on a platform of flavor, dietary values and versatility to be elected “favorite school lunch” during National School Lunch Week. Parents and community members can help celebrate National School Lunch Week with by volunteering in a local school cafeteria or visiting their child’s school to eat lunch. The USDA School Lunch Program has provided lunches to school children since 1946 when the National School Lunch Act was signed into law. Nationwide, more than 29 million students participate in the program each day.
