The Reader’s Digest National Word Power Challenge offers money for working on your vocabulary. It’s a great contest. Students from 4th to 8th grade from across America will be boning up on their reading and vocabulary skills in preparation for the Readers’ Digest National Word Power Challenge! You too can enter!It’s a great way to sharpen your vocabularies...boost your test-taking skills and foster a love of language. *Onomatopoeia? No, it’s not an extinct species! It means:“The formation of words in imitation of sounds” a figure of speech in which the sound of a word is imitative of the sound of the thing which the word represents; as, the buzz of bees; the hiss of a goose; the crackle of fire. - submitted by Elizabeth Seratt, Washington School, Greenville -- the 2005 Mississippi Word Power Challenge state champion. The Reader’s Digest National Word Power Challenge is a vocabulary contest designed for schools nationwide with any or all of grades four through eight. English-speaking students in eligible grades who have not reached their sixteenth birthday by the time of the school-level competition may participate. Every student is invited to participate. Reader’s Digest provides the questions and answers for the contest at all levels. Questions address the subject of vocabulary in a variety of question formats. There are four levels of competition: classroom, grade, state and national. To compete for advancement from grade to state level, each grade level winner must take the written Qualifying Test. Only students in the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades are eligible to advance to the state level contest. Up to one hundred of the highest-scoring eligible students in a state or territory advance to the state level. The first-place winner from each state contest advances to the national level.First place winners from the state competition will advance to the Nationals in Orlando Florida. Reader’s Digest will pay the transportation and accommodation expenses for all State/Territory Contest winners and their teacher-escorts (one per student). The teacher-escort must be a full-time teacher at the school the winning student attends. Final Round contestants will compete for the following prizes: First place: A $25,000 college scholarship, plus Reader’s Digest products for the student’s school.Second Place: A $15,000 college scholarship, plus Reader’s Digest products for the student’s school.Third Place: A $10,000 college scholarship, plus Reader’s Digest products for the student’s school.
